i'm not sure how the pirates respond is of any concern to Nikon.

If Nikon has good market success with the Z series, the third party manufacturers who make fully manual lenses would bring out product that mounts directly to the cameras.

These would be Samyang and Mitakon, and others.

These fully manual lenses do not require electronics, and will indicate that the Z series is having good volume in the market.

Tamron and Sigma will not make fully manual lenses so if the Z-mount interface is encrypted they would basically be shut out of the market. This might induce them to consider making fully manual lenses for the Z-mount if market volume is high enough.

Just guesses on my part. I'm not pushing their product; merely using their developments to gauge success of the Nikon mirrorless.

It's far too early to gauge success of something that nobody can yet buy.  As far as I'n aware (but I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong) Nikon does not provide the code to their F mount to the likes of Tamron, Sigma, other third party lens manufacturers etc. who nevertheless reverse engineer some very good lenses - is that not the same position as for the Z mount (I'm not a techy so may have missed something)?

And of course as far as I'm aware we don't know yet officially that Z mount is encrypted (I've not seen anything official but of course so much has been written I may have just missed it - and of course this encryption idea may be in the style of Nikon!).  Just thoughts.  Thanks for anything else useful that can be added.
