First of all, thank you very much for doing that, my fine feathered friend.

Secondly, this confirms that my approach to the exposure is not the problem here. Despite the strong directional light from the right, when setting this up I didn't see any real need to add any EC at all -- although your point about bracketing the exposure is well taken. In fact, most of my attention was taken by trying to get to a position where the flagpole was properly centred (involving taking a picture of a young couple before I could get them out of the position I wanted to be in). Even if I had bracketed it, I'm not sure I'd have picked another exposure as the shadows really make this picture for me.

Which brings me back to where I came in -- about LR that oily blue sky...
