Upgrade D3s to D4?

I have one slight concern about having a 12MP DSLR in 2018, and the concern is that 12MP will become obsolete or near-obsolete by 2020. I'm going to college in 2 years, and I'd like to be on some sort of photography team. My D3s is relatively new for me. I haven't had it for more than 2 weeks. I love it, but I'm worried that by the time I get into college, it'll be obsolete. That's almost like $1,200 down the drain.

I was considering the D4, as it's relatively newer. But it isn't as good in low light as my D3s.

Will the D3s still be good in 2020? What do you guys think?

Thanks!

I guess I don't need a D4. My D3s is a fantastic improvement over my previous D300. As for "What specific features have you actually identified in the D4 upgrade that you need and are not present in the D3s," the only thing I can think of is better image processing. That's it.

I'm hoping that I can submit at least a few good photos to my high school's yearbook this year with my D3s.

Also, a side question: To whom can I submit race car photos to? The racing team themselves? I don't know what to do with my photos. I think it'd be awesome if even one of my photos could be displayed on a racing team's website. :-O

Hopefully my D3s will also last me through college.
I see little point in going from a D3s to a D4. It won't make any significant difference to your results.

Have a look at the last ten or so entries on Kirk Tuck's blog, he's been on a bit of a vintage Nikon kick lately with a D700 and other gear.

Look at the images on the internet which were made with a D3s. Are they good enough for you? Assuming it continues to function, it will still make images that look that way in 2020.

Purchasing any camera in the belief it is a long term investment is not a good plan. Electronics in general are not the sort of device one should expect to give decades long. service.

Is that important? Do you even make many photographs in reduced illumination?

ANYTHING digital has a relatively short useful life. Digital cameras should be regarded as consumables. D3s or D4 either one, as they age they will begin to exhibit failures that cannot be corrected because no more service parts are available. The D3s and D4 are close enough in time that I suspect you're not likely to get much benefit in this regard by selecting the newer camera.
What do you guys think?
Yes, 16 mp is bigger than 12 mp. Not much. Not enough to care about particularly, but yes it's bigger. Given your stage in life I can't imagine you are going to be in a position to print a lot of images of any size, much less large enough to make a larger sensor worth the money.

Yes, the D4 is an excellent camera. So is the D3s.

If you are looking at D4's, take note of what memory card format is installed in the particular specimen you are considering. Some are configured for XQD cards, which are way more expensive than the cards used in your D3s.

What specific features have you actually identified in the D4 upgrade that you need and are not present in the D3s ? If you don't get another single thing from this response, take not of this question at least. It's very important. If you don't have a good answer to this question you don't need to change cameras.

Incidentally, just as a reality check, I happen to still have a D3s myself. I also have a D850 and two different medium format systems. The point being I can upgrade to a later pro body if I so choose, I just haven't found a good reason for doing so.

Get a D750 24MP camera that uses the EN-EL15 battery and has two slots for the modern SD cards, and has the best low light autofocus of any camera prior to the D5/D850. Add a grip and you can use the EN-EL15 or the EN-EL18b batteries in it.

Digital cameras are more like a computer than a camera. Most of the performance is from the sensor and processors (image and autofocus) and this is most obvious with the different EXPEED processors provided with different cameras.

The D3s uses the Expeed 2 processor, D4 uses the Expeed 3, and the D750 uses the Expeed 4 processor. There are more than 6 years of development between the D3s and the D750 and it shows.

You will save a lot of money buying SD cards instead of XQD for a D4 and you avoid putting money into CF cards that cost twice as much and CF is a dead format for cameras.

Keep the D3s you already have for a while and get acquainted with it.
Photography is an individual sport.

I gave handful but they may not be important to some. One I left off is backlit rear buttons. Very, very useful to me, but may not be to others.

Whatever you do - don't believe this crap.

I did the same thing and couldn't be happier. Loved the D3 and the look, but when zooming in on the images you tell it was only a 12mp file. Sold it for a great profit, waited and pulled the trigger on my new to me D4. I'm happy when I zoom in on the images on my D4. Only 4 more mp, but it make the difference to me.
