Because the A7 series is not a pocket camera with pancake lens. It's heavy and very often equipped with large and heavy lenses. Reducing its height by 1 cm will not make it much smaller, but the grip becomes much less stable.

For pocketable cameras the things are way different, of course. There the size reduction is welcome, even if it leads to poor grip and (to some degree) poor battery life.
