Smoky skies and the Foveon red layer

It is an interesting summer here in the Pacific Northwest but the sun in the skies is quite stunning/disturbing. I am really struggling to take photos that can both show the red sun and still be able to see the foreground.

Highly manipulated, used lots of fill light. Photo is only to show local conditions

I also noticed for the first time some vignetting in the upper right of the 18-300mm lens, as has been discussed elsewhere...

Exposed for sun, wire and bushings and uprights barely visible.

manipulated in SPP

Bob's most photographed pond

I have a trip next week to the Mt. Baker area of northern Washington and may have to shoot through the same smoke.

Sincerely seeking solutions.

Bob (yes, I get to do this at work also)

Look where you want to go. Don't look where you don't want to go.
