This is interesting because my experience was not the same as some here are saying.  I had really only my Tamron 18-270mm and my Canon 50mm last year in Rome/Pompeii/Florence.  I did find that I used the wide end far more often so that is certainly true but I did find many uses for IS stabilized telephoto.  Honestly the 50mm didn't make it on very often.

Many venues are very crowded and moving from here to there to recompose was not easy.  Also many exhibits kept you a fixed distance away so trying to cram a wide angle or medium tele up close may not be an option.  Many times I wanted to exclude as much humanity from a subject as possible and some telephoto reach was quite useful for that.
