If i use my D810 in dx mode to make my 150-600mm Tamron lens 900mm , how is that any different to using my camera in fx mode and cropping it in post ?

The results of the in-camera crop (DX mode) and the out of camera crop will be exactly the same. The differences are operational.

i) The camera can run at a higher frame rate, 6 fps rather than 5. I often use my D810 in 1.2x crop mode (25MP) for the higher frame rate.

ii) You get a frame line in the viewfinder to help you compose the DX shot.

iii) Only the crop will be stored, so you get a lot more images on a memory card.
