Some thoughts about dynamic ra(n)ge
4

To me all the rage about dynamic range and the overdone samples to show what it can do (and often ruin the image in the process by basically eliminating the shadows) has me sometimes thinking that DR has turned into DR, whereby the last R stands for rage.

That is to say: the mystery of what’s in the shadows, visible only to a certain extent and thus left to one’s imagination- in this case a very good thing! - should IMO remain a mystery. Too much Drange recovery isn’t always desirable and can truly ruin a picture by making it flat and even in tonality.

To resurrect underexposed pictures one is thankful to have plenty of DRange. Proper exposure is of course more ideal.

This is my personal mileage; yours may differ.  I shoot to make artistically pleasing images and DR isn’t my ordinary rage.

Welcoming your reactions !  Have a great day  !

For me the joy of photography is in the prints I make myself.
