GFX exposure strategy needed

I asked this on the "You probably don't know what ISO means" thread but it got lost in the following discussion:

Assuming I have chosen my aperture and shutter speed, what's a good exposure strategy for the GFX when ETTR at base ISO results in an exposure that's too long? At what point do I add negative exposure compensation and adjust in post, and at what point do I increase the ISO? I'm thinking of Jim Kasson's work that resulted in a strategy for the D850 and a7RIII.
