FZ1000, Perseids, 500 Rule, which focal length to use?

This will be my first attempt at photographing the Perseids.  I've done some researching on how to do it and have the following question about how to arrive the proper exposure interval with my FZ1000. Using the 500 rule (500 divided by lens focal length,) I am confused about which focal length to use in the formula.  Which focal length do I use, the actual (9.2mm) or the 35mm (25mm) equivalent? I'm thinking the 35mm equiv, 25mm which would give me a 20 sec exposure time.
