Aperture control?

Chris Malcolm wrote:

An important reason why Tamron and other 3rd party lens makers are ignoring the A-mount is that the A-mount is now the only mount which still uses mechanical spring and lever aperture control.

Assuming A-mount can be updated to use electronic aperture, how would new lenses (with electronic aperture) work on older cameras (a99, a99ii, a77ii, etc)? Could a firmware update allow existing cameras to use the existing pins in the mount to somehow communicate aperture commands?
