X100F - Strong discrepancy between EVF and LCD colours
Aug 5, 2018
Hello everyone!
I recently bought an X100F and had my first small outing with it today. Although I am very impressed by this little camera, I encountered one problem and I am not sure whether it is just a matter of settings or whether my unit is actually malfunctioning.
I went out today between 6 p.m. and roughly 7:30 p.m. in Germany. This means we had very harsh evening sun and lots of shadows.
Looking through the EVF I thought that something might be off from the get-go. At the end of the small photo walk, I wanted to capture a dark green door. The door was shown as being dark green (although not an exact match to what I saw, how could it be) on the rear LCD. The colour shown in the OVF is rather obvious, isn't it? But the EVF presented the dark green door as having a strong blue colour. I am not talking about a little blueish tint here. The door actually looked blue through the EVF. The same problem occurred a bit later with a green part of an umbrella that was shown green on the rear LCD but black in the EVF. To sum it up; the rear LCD was almost correct in its colour reproduction while the EVF was way off for selected colours, or at least for the colour green.
I cross-checked on the spot with a friend's X-T10. On his camera, the rear LCD and the EVF showed a matching colour (i.e. greens in both cases described above), the way it should be and the way I am accustomed to from my trusted X-E2.
The colour settings for both, EVF and LCD, were set to 0.
I used auto white balance.
Exposure compensation was set to 0.
Exposure compensation and white balance were set to be applied in the preview.
I did not use any filters.
The film simulation (as I shoot RAW and JPG) was Provia.
The camera was set to high performance mode.
What I just saw later, was that the brightness level was set to auto for the EVF and to 0 for the LCD.
Here are my questions...
Can this very strong shift from green to blue (or black) be due to the differing brightness settings (EVF: auto, LCD: 0)? Although I will try to re-check tomorrow with both set to 0, I somehow doubt it.
Do you have any other explanation related to possible setting problems?
Although I could set the colours for EVF and LCD to different values, e.g. turning the EVF's value a bit up to make it warmer (say +2 to 0), I assume that basically setting both to the same value (say 0) should result in a similar colour reproduction as the picture originates from the sensor. Am I right here?
Could it just be that the EVF panel has been badly calibrated during assembly and can be reset by Fuji service?
I am somehow at a loss here and would really appreciate your kind help. If my further experiments do not solve the issue tomorrow, I will let my dealer send the unit back to Fuji to fix it. The current behaviour drives me nuts and clearly is not tolerable for a camera in this price range (if it actually turns out to be a manufacturing fault). Luckily, me previous experiences with the Fuji service here in Germany have been very good!
Thank you!
