Re: Is it enough of an upgrade?

I would recommend renting one out to see if it worth purchasing G9 now or wait for the next generation of Panasonic cameras.

In my situation, as a still amateur I went from the GH4 to the GH5 and to be honest that is a bigger leap than say the G80 to the G9. The question is how much more are you going to benefit from the G9's features? It also possible with the rumours going round that we might see the GH6 next year and the following year we will get the G9 mkII. I personally don't expect to see an early 2019 GH6 launch.

It should be noted if I had the choice of between the G9 and the GH5, I would get the G9 because of better stabilisation, smaller heat sink and bigger grip. I personally believe the GH5's heat sink, plus the size of the grip and the 100-400 make it harder to hold with one hand. The G9 on the other hand is easier to hold but I think it's heavier than the GH4.

Below are the reasons why I upgraded from the GH4 to the GH5:

  • 20-megapixel sensor without an AA filter
  • Better iso performance.
  • Dual Stabilisation
  • Autofocus joystick, or what ever it called.
  • Improved Auto Focus
  • Canon 6D mk II was coming out at the time and cost a few hundred pounds more than the GH5. Also Youtube reviewers were examine the lacklustre 6DmkII and that basically push me over the edge.
