AF problems using polarizing filters.

Apologies if this has been addressed before, but I am getting mixed messages from previous posts.  I have had consistent problems using a circular polarized filters  with my Canon 5D3 and 5D4.  The auto focus just doesn't work.  I have read that this may be due to the reduction of light, but I don't think this correct since both these cameras will auto focus on very little illumination.  The filter I am using is marked CPL and is not a cheap unit.  I understand that linear polarizing filters do exhibit this problem.  Can anyone provide some clarification on this problem.  I assume it isn't fixable but it would be good to have my findings confirmed by others with the same problem.
