This is the apple site giving instructions on recovery mode. Basically, restart while pushing Command + 'R' (Command + N is network boot)

This allows a disk utility to analysis what is happening. and reinstall a corrupted OS. There should be a 'backup' OS on your disk to boot from so your data will not be gone in the reinstallation - Always have backups to your important data.

As I said my attempt to do a recovery mode restart failed. I'll try to get the tip on how to do it.
