Full Frame vs Crop Sensor Question

I have a Sony a7iii.

If I use crop mode, I can get a little more reach. But as I understand it, I'm just cropping out the center of the full frame. It's just the same as cropping in post, right?

So I'm guessing if I use crop mode (Super 35) that I'm not getting a 24MP file.

So that means a 24MP crop sensor camera will give a more detailed image than using the Super 35 mode on a Sony a7iii.

Am I understanding this?

If I'm right, then there's really no reason to ever use the crop mode in photo mode because I can just crop in post. I guess it could just save me some post-processing time.

I guess where the crop mode really becomes valuable is in video.
