Shark week has me thinking. How to get on as cinematographer/photographer?

I love shark week. I love learning and more than that I love the cinematography. This got me thinking how do these cinematographers get these gigs? I'm sure a lot is knowing someone in the research community.

I would think for someone like myself who want to gain access to this type of opportunity would not only need the obvious passport and dive certifications. Having the proper equipment and considering I've seen a few Red cameras this can get prices(underwater rigs aren't cheap)

But as far as actually getting the job, anyone know who that works ?

I would think that the best way to get a job like this would be to shoot as much underwater footage and stills as possible(sharks would be great but I imagine very hard to get vs general underwater sea life).  Contact university research/marine biology departments and send them links to your work and letting them know you would appreciate consideration on upcoming expeditions. I'm sure sending to other places like tv channels, and other publications wouldn't hurt. I'm sure it's very competitive, but I don't see it as being as competitive and say professional sports or supermodels, but maybe I'm just naive.

So what are your thoughts, and suggestions ? Sure I'm not the only one here who loves shark week and thinks a gig like this would be awesome.
