The top layer in a Foveon sensor is already monochrome and panchromatic.

Kind of. It is, like most B&W film, a bit more blue sensitive. So - generally, it needs a yellow filter for e.g. landscapes.

I'm thinking of no color filter for the top 1st layer, only luminance info. The 2nd layer consists of only RB color filter array. Sigma can look at it as YUV or YCrCb kind of processing. Might turn out to be something really cool.

The disadvantage of this is that the number of photons reaching the second layer is already reduced by absorption in the top layer, so adding colour filters will make things worse.

Any difference from past and current Foveon sensors? That disadvantage is already inherited in the Foveon concept from the start.
