DX outdoor sports. Tight budget.

My DX 55-300 VR developed a rattle, something broken loose inside, and jams when zooming. Of course I found this out this morning on the kayak with a bald eagle perched nearby and found the zoom jammed at 55mm... but that's beside the point I suppose. I normally use the lens for outdoor sports.

So obviously I need to replace it, and very soon.

Right now the 55-300VR, an identical replacement, is $150 refurbished direct from Nikon.

But I don't think the 55-300 is very sharp at the 300 end, nor very good in low light.

Is there anything better for around the price?  Refurbished is fine, or even EX-condition used from a reputable dealer.

My D7100 is not compatible with the new AF-P lenses...
