Next time you see an old backlit LCD monitor or TV in the trash heap, tear it down and you will find the backlight diffuser consists of several layers of thin plastic designed for this exact purpose.  So you have a thick piece of acrylic, a super bright piece of white plastic, and several layers of various diffuser materials.   Its an inexhaustible font of stuff to play with, plus tearing stuff apart is fun.  The opaque, rear plastic makes a great bounce flash, the front layers are ideal as diffusers.

And you are keeping these dangerous plastics from clogging some dolphin's blow hole.
