Questions re: Back up external disk drive. How to?

Hello Macheads,

I am not computer savvy. I have read that I should “back up ” my iMac in case the internal drive dies or data gets corrupted

I have a late 2012 iMac desktop with 3 TB internal hard drive. I have an 4 TB Western Digital Studio 4 TB 3.0 USB connected to the iMac and used for Time Machine. It’s been very reliable since connected in 2012.

I want to add an external hard drive to back up my iMac since I have no other backup of/for my data I.e. photos and videos.

I am considering an OWC brand Mercury Elite Pro 4 TB external disk drive for backing up my iMac. Option include either 3.0 or FireWire connection. Is FireWire better than USB for my purpose? It’s on sale now.

Is OWC a reliable brand? My Western Digital external drive has been very reliable.

What is the purpose of partitioning the disk drive?

Why and how to partition the disk drive?

How much space on the disk drive to allocate for the partition?

Is partitioning the disk drive really necessary?

Thanks for your advice and help.
