How to capture moving subject before it is in frame?

Something that I've always been confused about.. I've had a 70D for a few years but haven't really used it that often. I ride BMX and it's one of the main things I am interested in photographing. We often ride trails (dirt jumps) and it would be pretty impossible to get the person in the frame before going off a jump in order to track them. Basically just have to aim at the jump and wait for them to get there. So my question is how would I go about making sure they will be in focus then? I see lots of people taking pictures this way and they come out amazing and perfectly in focus but the few times I've tried the results were horrible.

Canon EOS 70D
