Cool test. What algorithm did you use for downsampling and upsampling?

Sinc (Lanczos 3) in GIMP, both for down and up, as I assumed that Hugin doesn't use anything fancy.

It's not the best that I'd like, I've seen better resizing from Flickr. It's on my to-do list to figure out a better scaling method (in Ubuntu). Here's where I tracked down the differences between Flickr and GPhotos scaling:
