Dinghy racing from beach into the sun

I've reluctantly * agreed to photograph some dinghy races so I'm looking for some tips.

The beach faces south and the boats will be about 100 yards offshore. So I fear most of the crews will be in shadow most of the time which makes me think the photos will not look very good. The races are in the middle of the day so the sun should be quite high as this is the south Devon coast in England.

I have a choice of Canon 5d Mk2 with 75-300mm or Canon SX40 - bridge camera with up to about 800mm equiv - but much smaller sensor.

Also, I've got to get some prints made straight after the races which means not much time to play around cropping and so on, not that I'm an expert at that either.

Any tips welcome.

* I say reluctantly, but it does get me out of food prep and washing up duty for the BBQ as I'm basically a drinking member not a sailing member at the club.
