It is a handheld shot so no MF but AF with an adapted size of the AF sensor Moreover the actual size at 100% is rather small and focus peaking not so useful fror precise MF on this kind of target

I might try tonight with my sturdy Manfrotto tripod to see if I can improve sharpness nevertheless

In PP use of Nik Viveza 2 plug in in PS for local improvement of light and contrast using local points

The main obstacle for sharpness is diffraction of light on craters due to lateral illumination

Nice, I guess great minds think alike LOL. Your shot is nearly identical to what I took and posted on Facebook last night. Fuji XT-1 & vintage Minolta 400mm APO with matching Minolta 2X APO teleconverter. JPEG with some crop.

interesting

Now the one tonight

This one is better than yestreday due to more visible part allowing fine focus with focus peaking easily

Moon tracker, why not ?

Yes very nice. Here in the US, I need to wait a few more hours till dark. I do have the Fuji 100-400 & 2X TC but for moon shots, i prefer my old Minolta APO glass which render images equal to the Fuji 100-400/2X TC combo. Also when using manual focusing, I find focusing with older super telephotos is a little more precise than with the Fuji 100-400. However, the AF with the 100-400 is of course wonderful when needed.

yes, a genuine mechanical system is probably more precise in extreme situations

That said setting the system to linear is much mure comfortable than before

On the second shot there was plenty of details to help focus peaking so I eventually got perfect focus Interestingly in pire AF the difference was minimal which is a good positive point for the Fuji

Not exactly Rennes, you are right Noyal sur Vilaine 15km from center of town in the Paris direction 30m higher than Rennes

OTOH Rennes is a rather small town (220 000 inhab) and there are few sources of severe pollution

Thx for supporting ...

Impossible to see them on T shirts, out of stock .. :-)

Nice capture.

Other than Manual Focus (I assume) any other hints? PP?
I might be missing something here.

I assume that the moon is way beyond infinity on the focus scale. In any case, it is bright enough and has enough contrast for AF to work. I am therefore wondering why you might need to use manual focusing unless you mean simply setting the lens to the infinity mark.

impossible to do that with my combo XF 100-400 plus 1.4x TC

You then entirely rely to AF Using eventually focus peaking in MF gives you the assurance of correct focus I found a slight difference in sharpness between AF and MF in the second shot posted

In the first one AF might be unreliable due to the small surface

Another concern that can indice wrong focus is the diffraction in some parts of the moon due to the lateral light Adjusting in MF is then much safer

In a classic MF lens you are right This is the problem with all new lenses where you cannot get a distance ring ... sad isn't it ?

Tu as bien de la chance. Moi je vis a Tokyo et je m'estime heureux de voir une dizaine d'etoiles! :D

et en ce moment le temps est juste paradisiaque

I have a new appoinment with Miss Moon tonight, she is putting on weight evryday, will report to morrow

A +

Excellent points! When shooting Infinity especially with long lenses, I often much prefer to use my vintage telephotos as I have more control than I do with these fancy new electronic based lenses. On the other hand though, I do still shoot film and so I have a strong aptitude for analog systems :)
