One thing I just found out after looking at darktable output from BryceM: the extra sharpness actually came from my denoise combo. Here's the output of the same signs scene, using the same dt style but with the three "Profiled Denoise" instances turned off.

darktable, Markesteijn 3-pass, 5-times, no denoise

darktable, Markesteijnm 3-pass, 5-times, 3 Profiled Noise instances

So, you might want to look into what those three denoise instances do.

FWIW, I found a DTStyle file that corresponds closely to your settings here: https://dtstyle.net/download.php/391/Denoise%20-%20profiled.dtstyle

I played with it some as well as another one from the same source that, while a little more processor intensive (9-steps), seemed to render cleaner detail in the test files I examined: https://dtstyle.net/download.php/392/00-Denoise.dtstyle

Side-by-side comparison

No NR applied to Kodak Tri-X 400 dtstyle from https://github.com/t3mujin/t3mujinpack

Same image with "Denoise - profiled.dtstyle" applied.

Same image with 9-step "D00-Denoise.dtstyle " applied.
