Help! EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens autofocus

Hello, I'm a complete armature photographer, so I'm not sure if its me malfunctioning or the camera/lens.

I upgraded from a Canon EOS Rebel XTI/300 F/4-5.6 III lens to a Rebel T7i/EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens. I use manual and autofocus depending on the subject. With my old set up I was able to get great pictures of moving objects with autofocus, like birds. With my new set up the autofocus is not working right. An example was a bird I was trying to take a picture of this weekend. It was just sitting on a tree limb, I zoomed in so the bird was in the middle, it was not moving but the auto focus kept focusing on the left upper screen. This has been going on since I bought it. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
