Occasionally you hear people saying that cellphones will make our cameras obsolete.

These are people who have no interest in photography, either as pros or as serious hobbyists. They're like people who only eat at McD's arguing that automation will make cooks obsolete, when they would never go to an eat-in gourmet restaurant run by a famous chef.

And how often do people take their families out to a gourmet restaurant?

I have, literally, never done it. I just can’t justify blowing that kind of money on a meal for us.

I'm curious: where did I mention families? Can you point to where I mentioned them?

Thanks.

You didn’t. You’re welcome.

You totally avoided the point though - that going “gourmet” kills volume. Volume that doesn’t need help killing, because cell phones are already (the thread subject) doing it since they actually do an increasingly credible job for a growing number of use cases.

As volume shrinks there will be an upward pressure on prices as manufacturers strive for profitability, which will further reduce the market. It’s a vicious circle.

(Families incidentally may be the one area where you might grow the ILC market. When little Tammy starts playing a ball game, her parents will want to document her achievements, and that’s an area where phones are likely to have problems for the foreseeable future. For the overwhelming majority of families, blowing several thousand dollars to shoot Tammys ball game is excessive though. This category may in the future be more locked out of the market than they  are today.)
