I'm glad you started this thread.  I was at probably the most touristy place in the city(Grande Place, Brussels) yesterday.  I think for every camera, I saw 20/30 smartphones.  I thought about this.  What I decided was, that there are many reasons for taking pictures.  A selfie to post on Facebook or such is not the same as a Professional wedding photo, or a serious portrait. Even travel photos can be different.  For example, pictures with a camera,tend to be more delibarate.  You check white balance, aperature/shutter speed, composition... a smartphone, more of a snapshot. I have Nothing against selfies and smartphone pictures, many very good.  But, I'm not sure that they serve the same purpose.
