Occasionally you hear people saying that cellphones will make our cameras obsolete.

These are people who have no interest in photography, either as pros or as serious hobbyists. They're like people who only eat at McD's arguing that automation will make cooks obsolete, when they would never go to an eat-in gourmet restaurant run by a famous chef.

And how often do people take their families out to a gourmet restaurant?

I have, literally, never done it. I just can’t justify blowing that kind of money on a meal for us.

The comparison is apt though. The user base for digital cameras are getting ever smaller as cell phone cameras evolve, a lot of people still use a digital camera bought when cell phone cameras gave atrocious results. Will they buy again at this point in time? Only the most affluent or most committed will. Thus you see compact camera sales nose diving, and sales of ILCs slowly dropping.

There will always be an audience for the benefits that ILCs can bring, but those benefits grow progressively more esoteric.
