Why did this camera (Minox made in 1948-1969) never replace SLR's?

It was about the size of modern phones. The film format was 8x11mm. About 10% of the area of 135 film. Smartphones have only 3.5% the sensor area of FF.

I remember B&W prints on 9x13 paper looked reasonably good - about like smartphone pics.
