Best focusing technique w/out using the touchscreen?

Hi Everyone, I'm the new owner of a Panasonic G7 and new to M4/3. I'm a Nikon shooter and am very accustomed to doing single point autofocus using the four-way controller. Is there a way to replicate this technique in Panasonic land (or is it even worth replicating this)? As much as I am liking the focus by touchscreen (and the fact that I can do this while the EVF is up to my eye), I have some serious muscle memory built up from my Nikon and am wondering...

That being said, hopefully an old dog can learn new tricks... I want to keep an open mind to new techniques and tech. So everyone, what technique do you use for autofocus? Do people really use the face detection or tracking? On more than one occasion I've wondered whether I'd be better off doing manual focusing and some sort of old school street photography zone focusing technique (which I would have to learn too!).

Thanks!
