Wide/Tracking (it's Wide with AF-S, Tracking with AF-C) never uses PDAF except in one case, so inside/outside the PDAF area shouldn't matter. That one case -- AF-C combined with CH drive mode -- limits the Tracking AF mode to the PDAF area because it'll try to use PDAF. Either way, corner brackets mark the AF area in the viewfinder.

In any event, Tracking AF is designed for a fixed camera -- perhaps on a tripod -- tracking a moving object against an unchanging background. Zone AF is what you want if you're keeping the subject in about the same position in the frame while the background can change because you're tracking with the camera. So I fully agree with the recommendation of using Zone, not Wide/Tracking.
