Thanks everyone, for their analyses and recommendations. Lots of votes for Affinity Photo. However, this reviewer gave it a low rating for novice users: https://www.digitalphotomentor.com/photo-editing-software/#affinity

She was pretty enthusiastic about Luminar, especially for novice users: https://www.digitalphotomentor.com/photo-editing-software/#luminar

But I didn't see any comments about this program from DPR users.

I will take the recommendation of trying out 2-3 programs and making my decision based on direct experience.

For just obtaining a technically correct image, exposure, highlights, contrast etc. you can do all of this in DXO-PL. It also majors on "automatic" corrections so minimal user effort required. I always suggest DXO-PL for jpg users wanting to change to raw. Just open the raw in DXO-PL, adjust overall brightness and you are normally good to go.

Want to do more editing learn the local adjustment tools.

Affinity Photo is used for pixel editing like removing objects, replacing a sky etc, so more knowledge is needed if you want to do these sort of things. Plenty of video tutorials on YouTube on the Serif AP channel.
