Is the Price of the Sony RX100 VI Too High? Compared to What?
3

The Sony RX100 VI can be considered a miniature camcorder with all of Sony's latest video technologies. It is thus relevant to compare it to Sony's latest "professional" camcorder for consumers, the AX700. To get that you pay $1899. To get the RX100 VI you pay $1199. So, how do they compare? Is it fair to compare at all?

Let's look at what they have in common:

same sensor - the latest 1"
PDAF focusing
10 Picture profiles, including HLG and the latest log mode - Slog3 with Sgamut3
HFR video - 120 fps-900 fps at Full HD
f2.8-f4.5 zoom lens (same aperture range)
touch screen focus
one lens ring that is multipurpose (focus or zoom or a setting)
time code
clean HDMI out (422 8bit)
zebras, focus peaking, magnification
gamma display assist
many adjustments to the behavior of auto focus
focus tracking

Let's go over the superior features of the RX100 VI:

widest focal length is 24mm, as opposed to 29mm
more PDAF points: 315 versus 273
faster AF focus (the RX100 Vi has the latest LSI, the AX700 does not)
stills, stills with RAW capability and 24 fps burst mode
the VI oversamples the full sensor to get 4K; I can find no claim for that for the AX700 (may be true)

bluetooth
full manual mode in video, still not true for the AX700
the AX700 is 3.4X the weight (2.25 lbs vs 10.7 oz.) including battery
the AX700 is almost twice as big along the longest dimension, bigger in every dimension

There must be something you get for the extra $700 and all that bulk and weight, right? yes

longer reach zoom: 29-348mm as opposed to 24-200mm
built-in ND filters (3)
no 5 minute limit for 4K shooting
no overheating
external mic port
2 slots for sd cards (both uhs-1)
bigger lcd screen

longer battery life (well, the battery is much bigger)

So, the RX100 VI price does not seem so out of line. Many reviewers do not get that the RX100 VI is a video camera (perhaps mainly not just too). It has real limitations as a dedicated video camera, but its video image quality, video features and performance are at the cutting edge.
