I shoot in A because focus point and focus fall-off are important to me.

So when you said

I would start by deciding what exposure time suited the scene, especially if water is involved.

'start" didn't mean you make your first setting. You meant that before you've decided on which shutter speed you want, you've already decided on aperture.

I guess that I could shoot in M but I'm used to A. I know you are going to point out that I'm essentially using ISO plus EC to set exposure time.

Yeah.

But what I'd prefer to point out is that when you said

Auto ISO would be my default setting for walkabout. For more considered shooting off a tripod, I would like to make my own choices, not least between DR, shot noise, read noise and highlight posterisation.

the implication was that it was Auto-ISO which prevented you from making your own choices, when in fact one could make the same choices while using Auto_ISO if one didn't use such a convoluted approach to adjusting shutter.

We are in heated agreement (apart from what works for me).
