Thoughts after a month with a Fuji
12

Having transitioned to mostly shooting with the Oly 17/1.8 on my GX7, I ended up splurging on a Fuji X100F recently. I think the GX7 is still one of the best designed cameras ever, but here are some comparisons I've noted since using the Fuji:

  • The small grip on the Fuji (as well as the recent m43 comparables that I considered -- GX85, GX9, Pen F) makes me appreciate how awesome the GX7 grip is. It's just a perfect size and I don't really get why other cameras insist on having such smaller ones. Unless people are routinely sticking bodies with no lenses on them in their pockets, I don't see a disadvantage to the little bulk.
  • The autofocus speed with the 17mm is still really fast all these years later. Comparable to the Fuji.
  • The Fuji exposes more accurately for me. I find I'm constantly dialing up the exposure comp. on the GX7 whereas the Fuji just gets it right.
  • Hype aside, the Fuji jpegs really are way better. I've read that the newer m43 offerings have improved here, but this camera's jpegs just run circles around the ones from my GX7. Right now I've been shooting RAW+JPG and only occasionally importing the raws to work on in LR.
  • The Auto ISO settings are a total game-changer for me. One of the things that grew to frustrate me with the GX7 was the inability to set a minimum shutter speed while controlling the depth of field. Sure, there were work-arounds but none of them like the ability to switch between 3 different presets (with different minimum shutter speeds and maximum ISOs) on the fly with a dial. Going in, I thought I'd be using the shutter speed ring to shoot in manual with Auto ISO a lot, but I find that I rarely need to because I can so easily manipulate my shutter speeds with these presets.
  • I LOVE the aperture ring. It was one of the main draws for me and I wish more m43 lenses had them. It's really nice to be able to look at the camera and know what exposure settings you have before even turning it on.
  • Speaking of aperture rings, here's what might have prevented me from getting this camera and sticking fully with m43: if there were a decent pancake offering with an aperture ring. Something like the Panny 20mm but with the aperture ring and modern focusing speeds. Not to pile on, but it just seems like a no-brainer for someone to make one of these; so many people would buy one.
  • The lens that makes me not want to get rid of my m43 stuff? The Oly 45 1.8. It's so great and such an awesome combo with the GX7 (and I assume other smaller bodies). Yesterday on an outing I took the X100f and the GX7 with the 45 and it was a great combo to have. As practical as just carrying the 17mm instead of the Fuji? Maybe not, but man...

Anyway, I'm loving the Fuji so far but didn't come to bash m43. Unless other brands/formats can figure out how to have such awesome little lenses, I still think it's the best ILC system for a huge portion of shooters.
