I spoke to Canon's technical support team a couple of days ago and they advised me to not add a filter directly on the lens, but to add one to the lens hood. I'm not exactly sure why they make this recommendation, but I'll follow Canon's advice.

Well, I can think only of one reason why they would make such a groundless recommendation: make people buy the optional and rather expensive lens hood...;-)

Their margins on accessories (batteries, lens hoods, etc.) must be three times higher than on cameras and lenses.

Otherwise I like Canon!..;-)
