lenses, crop factor and field of view

hello,

i have one question about the above subject that bothers me a lot and it might be due to terminology, that i can't find a clear answer to it.

we often talk about how e.g. an APSC sensor yields a 56mm lens (full frame equivalent) out of a 35mm lens, due to the 1.6 crop factor.

my question is: is it really true that cropping by 1.6 to the center of a 35mm lens will be equivalent to a 56mm lens on a full frame body?? to my understanding, a wide lens gives a complete different effect. just cropping into the center of it will not change what i understand as its "field of view", or to describe what i mean, cropping to the center of a wide angle lens will not change the fact the model's nose looks bigger and disproportional to their face.

so isn't it then absolutely wrong to make people believe that their 35mm lens absolutely equals a 56mm lens on an APSC camera?

thanks for your help

s.
