'Photos' as library mac

How advisable is it to have the built-in 'Photos' on the mac as my main photo library?

Can you have multiple versions of the same photo?  For example, the as-shot jpg, the processed jpg, a black and white version, another version with a different crop, etc..

What about hidden folders or ones that you don't want to be part of the main library?

My original intention was to go with lightroom, which I have not used before, but am not interested in getting into a subscription service.  It seems easier to just use photos that came with the mac if there is no major downside.

For background, I'm relatively new to mac, and had a pretty good system on a PC but it wasn't very friendly to automated backups.  I'm trying to come up with a system for mostly photos on an external harddrive, with smaller versions in the photos library, and using a separate disk for Time Machine.  Thank you.
