The general statement that "Amazon charges sales tax in my area" is a little misleading.

Sales on Amazon fall into three categories, and each has a different taxation policy.

1) Sold by Amazon, fulfilled by Amazon - Amazon's policy is to collect local sales tax in all states that have a sales tax.

2) Sold by a third party, fulfilled by Amazon - It's up to the merchant to choose whether or not to collect the sales tax. As of last week the law required them to collect sales tax for any state where they had a "presence". This include product stored in an Amazon warehouse.

3) Sold by a third party, fulfilled by a third party - It's up to the merchant to choose whether or not to collect the sales tax. As of last week the law required them to collect sales tax for any state where they had a "presence".   Amazon warehouse locations were not a factor as they don't stock product from this company.

So while you might be charged sales tax on items sold by Amazon, taxation may vary on items that sold by third parties.
