Forget Kodak. How did other mainstream cameras fall out of the loop?

Remember Minolta and Pentax in the 1970s and 80's?  (or not).  Competitive with Nikon and Canon, ads in all the magazines, huge sellers.  Now, Minolta is gone, Pentax is very small in the scheme of things leaving only Olympus, Nikon and Canon (and upstart Sony) at the top of the camera food-chain.  Panasonic is in there, but I don't think they are big sellers.  All secondary companies from the 1970's/80's (Konica, Vivitar, Mamiya) are gone except for Ricoh, which really isn't a factor.
