I've read about and seen examples of bad quality images shot at wide angle with the 17-70mm C Global Vision lens, but has anyone here been able to produce good quality results at 17mm with that lens on an SD1 Merrill? (Or even on an SD Quattro or SD Quattro H?)
I have this lens. How well it does depends on the subject matter. When photograph architecture, at 17mm there is some distortion and some softness in corners.
But when photographing nature these things don’t matter so much.
I made a 24x36 inch print (focal length unknown) with this lens on SD1M and its looks great and sharp.
Adrian you have a photo of a field of grass with a distant barn and silo in your landscapes gallery. It seems to be photo IMG09250. Is that one of your shots with the 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS C at 17mm? If so, can you remember what aperture you shot that at? I'm thinking you might have shot it at f11. That photo looks to me good enough. If I can shoot photos like that with the 17-70 at 17mm then that lens is fine, as far as I'm concerned. I suspect though that it was shot with an 18-35mm f1.8 Art lens at 18mm. Am I right?
THAT SHOT:
As I said: SD10, shot at f/8.0
33mm setting = 56mm equivalent
ISO 100, 1/200 sec., aperture priority, pattern metering,
Which lens? Good question. It wasn't the 17-70mm, but the 18-200mm Sigma DC, 1:3.5-6.3 II HSM, which I got with my SD1M. I don't use this lens much, as I have the 18-300C, which I bought as a longer reaching travel lens, and which is not bad at all either.
But the 17-70 is sharper, but all these zoom lenses are not so hot at the widest angles.
the 18-200 at 200 (equiv. to ca. 300mm):
