Cable release compatibility

I bought a cheap, generic remote which works perfectly on my E-M5 mark II, and thought it should work on a Pen-F. Half pressing gets focus, so it is plugged in OK, but pressing right down does not fire the shutter. Are the two cameras fundamentally different in the remote they require, or does it mean I was just unlucky in buying a remote from a company that had not done its reverse-engineering correctly?

Of course, I could use an old fashioned film-era cable release on the Pen-F, but somehow an electonic remote seems less likely to move the camera than a mechanical release, however flexible.
