Focus issues...me, equipment, or paranoia?

If the camera moves enough, and the shutter speed is long enough, you picture will be bad.

How many pixels did you use?

On the pictures with the entire bird, is that almost the entire frame?

Or are those whole birds surrounded by lots of picture that you have cropped off?

Show us the entire frame, please.

The bigger you blowup a picture, the softer it gets. I believe you have just a small area of the entire frame, and that small area is then blown up a lot.

BUT ANYWAY, have you tried putting the camera on a tripod, raising the ISO so you are both an f stop smaller and a full shutter speed jump faster, and photographed something that does not move, and has lots of surface containing sharp info. Fill the frame, A loaf of bread would work.

Shoot that for us.
