Matera, Basilicata, Italy
11

Matera is either the second or third (Petra, Allepo) oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Cave dwellers lived in caves, some natural, some carved out of the soft limestone, 9,000 to 10,000 years ago. Later buildings were built around the caves. Starting in the 600's Byzantine monastics came and lived in the caves, and as well built churches and painted the cave walls with frescoes. The city was invaded (with the usual mass slaughter) by the Normans, Saracens (Italians have used this word since the middle ages to include all Muslims) Aragons, and Lombards. The photos were taken with an Olympus OMD EM5 hand held, and post processed in LR and Photoshop. This place is magical, a hidden gem in Southern Italy. And my wife says the men in Matera are the sweetest men in all of Italy!
