It depends on the latitude and time of year. Mid day sun is fine here in the North of England.

At the Equator at noon, you can shoot those neat pictures of palm trees with their shadows directly beneath them.

Good lighting conditions are found on a nice cloudy day with a deep consistent overcast. Interesting and beautiful lighting conditions are found in the golden hours of late afternoon-- more challenging than the overcast, but prettier.
