you'll get that shape from small points of light outside the lens, at any distance. One of the reasons better lenses have more aperture blades to give more rounded circles.

Interesting. Mine seem to come from larger light sources, as it appears to be in the OP's photos.

Are you talking about an out of focus points of light? That I understand, but this is a ghost overlaying the scene. not even over the light that it seems to be created by.
