A question about polariser filters

Hi there,

I am considering getting a polariser for the reason of getting rid of the light on water surfaces. I often take photos of the sea and rivers and during the afternoon sun, I'd love to get more detail in these.

The reason for my question is that when you position a polariser it, and the lens, needs to be 90 degrees from the sun. However when you are shooting north for example (I'm in northern hemisphere) and the sun is behind you, where do you then position it? Is it directly above as that is theoretically the closest area?

And finally, just quickly with a yes or no, do you recommend actually getting a polariser for an intermediate user?

Thanks a lot.
