Re: X-H1 vs X-E1 IQ Output. Old Cameras Are Better

I would normally agree with what you’re saying - I shoot jpegs and have very mixed feelings about the X-Pro2 output vs X-Pro1 - but weirdly in this example you’ve posted I don’t really see the issue. As others have said, the first two images are actually very close and I wouldn’t easily be able to choose which was “best” - to be honest, I suspect in a blind test few would be able to tell which was which.
Good morning Threaded.
Yes I totally agree with you and Joachim, and thats exactly what I said, that the photo or output from the XH1 is not bad or ugly and they are close, but you do see that the XH1 is a bit too pink, right? My old XE1 is able to separate some color tones a bit better, between the lips and skin tone. Personally I always found that fascinating how only fuji could do that and this was one of the main reasons why I fell in love with fuji, not because fuji's skin tones were "accurate" but because they are much lovely looking compared to the competition.
Having said that, I kept playing more with this stuff in LR and I have found that for more tan/brownish looking skin tones Astia Soft looks better and that looks closer to the XE1 look. In another previous thread it was suggested to me to use Provia Standard, but for certain types of skin tones like the sample ones, I find Astia Soft much better wit the XH1.
Either way the newer fuji cameras do require a bit more PP and touch ups here and there. My point is simply that the older cameras are still better and easier/faster when it comes to PP time with jpegs and RAW.
I haven't used my XE1 in a LONG time and It has just been sitting there accumulating dust, but those old 16MP cameras ain't no slouch, and just for the heck of it and for fun I wanted to compare both these cameras and I sure didnt mean for some to feel so offended. But so far, I personally prefer the overall qualities of the old 16MP sensors.
And don't get me wrong, when I said that the newer fuji's require some more PP is still better and easier than other camera manufacturers, and remember that the comparison above is between the same brand so the difference is not huge either.
Either way I like my XH1 a lot.
Have a very nice weekend.
The third image on the other hand looks like neither of them, in the skintones or anywhere else, and is, well, certainly not to my taste. If that had come out of either camera by default I’d be appalled!
